Next Level Tips: Ghost Toilet!

Next Level Tips: Ghost Toilet!

Is your toilet turning on by itself???

Need some next level tips from the best plumber in town? Perfect! We’ve got you covered! Next Level Plumbing’s owner and master plumber, Byron Thomson, has a few tips for you on how to take care of that troublesome toilet!

If you hear your toilet turn on by itself, don’t worry, you don’t have ghosts, it is either your cat that flushed the toilet, or most likely the flapper in the toilet has failed and is wasting water down the drain.

When this happens the toilet turns on by itself for a short time, then turns back off again. It is a good idea to call the plumber quickly on this one because it is wasting water every second you wait. By putting it off for days, weeks, or even months, you can waste hundreds or thousands of gallons of water, which costs money, and then you will still have to repair it in the end.

So be proactive and repair the toilet at the first sign of trouble and don’t waste money and water procrastinating.

Next Level Tips: Reduce Blockages!

Next Level Tips: Reduce Blockages!

Need some next level tips from the best plumber in town? Perfect! We’ve got you covered! Next Level Plumbing’s owner and master plumber, Byron Thomson, has some tips for you on how to reduce drain blockages in your home!

There is never really a good time for your drain to back up. Whether it is the shower, sink, kitchen, or toilet, it is very frustrating and will be a pain until it is taken care of. So how can you reduce the amount of times you will need to call a plumber to clean the drains with a snake?

One of the very common stoppages in bathroom sinks and showers is gunk buildup with hair. The gunk comes from soap scum, shaving cream, toothpaste, etc., that builds up in the drains and eventually blocks them up. The sink starts to get slower and slower and because of that the edges of the bowl get dirty much faster, until finally you have to call the plumber.

One thing you can do to reduce the chances of this happening is to use a product that has safe bacteria and enzymes in it which eat that gunk that builds up. This helps break down the amount of gunk in the lines, ensuring the lines run clear for longer. These have an added advantage of not being a chemical, which is drastically safer to use in your house.

Also manually cleaning any hair you see before it goes down the drain is helpful.

How to reduce the cost of plumbing, and plumbing related expenses.

Let our knowledgeable plumbers help you out this summer! Keep reading to learn how to reduce the cost of plumbing, and plumbing related expenses, from Next Level Plumbing’s owner and master plumber, Byron Thomson!

-Water filtration-

Having a whole house water filter on your house will decrease the problems you have with plumbing. It removes chlorine, which helps the flapper last longer in your toilets, which wastes less water, and means you have to call the plumber less often.

It also helps the faucet finishes last longer because the water is not as aggressive on the finish, so the nice faucets you have in your house will keep looking nice longer. It helps the internal plumbing parts last longer in faucets and toilets, reducing both leaks and times you need to call a plumber.

Water filtration is also good for your body. Your skin absorbs water and what is in the water, so minimizing the amount of showers in chlorine treated water is healthier as it asks your body to do less filtration as well.

Of course, drinking water should also be filtered!

Installing a water filter on the whole house is one of the bigger things you can do to help your plumbing system last longer, and to live and be healthier!

Hopefully this is helpful, and as always, if you have questions about what toilet to choose for your house, give us a call or text us and we would be happy to come out and discuss the right solution to fit your needs.

Ask Your Plumber: Toilet Differences

AYP: Ask Your Plumber

-Toilet Differences-

1.6 or 1.28?

This is a question most people don’t even know to ask when choosing a new toilet. But it can be the difference of potentially hundreds, and sometimes thousands of dollars down the road. Since it is such an important decision, let’s dive into what it is and what it means to you.

The numbers 1.6gpf or 1.28gpf stands for the gallon per flush in a toilet. Toilets are designed to flush a very specific amount of water every time they are flushed. They are engineered to hold a certain amount of water in the bowl, and that coupled with the amount of water that the toilet tank flushes equals the amount of water the toilet uses each flush, or gpf (gallons per flush).

Now that we know what those numbers mean, let’s look at why they are important for you to consider when choosing a new toilet.

At Next Level Plumbing we are all for saving water, it is a precious commodity and we don’t want to waste the good clean water, or tax the sewage treatment plants anymore than we need to. But sometimes, in the effort to save as much water as we can, we run into side effects.

The biggest side effect we run into with how much water toilets use is how the drains under the floor perform when less water is used. Often the toilets being replaced use up to 3 or even 5 gallons each and every flush! That is a lot of water, but it is also what the house was designed to use and changing that can create stoppages.

So how can you tell if you will have a problem with your new low flow water saving toilet? Unfortunately there isn’t a sure way to know up front. However, we can make certain assumptions based on the house.

How old is your house?

In the mid 1980’s the Sarasota and Bradenton areas switched from Cast Iron drain pipes to PVC drain pipes. The new toilets work better in most cases with the PVC drains under the floor. A good rule of thumb is to make sure to get the 1.6gpf toilet if you have older drain pipes under the house.

Another big consideration is how far the drain exits the house from the toilet in question.

Is it 5-10′? Or like in many Florida homes is it 60-80′? Even with new PVC piping we see problems with a 1.28gpf toilet installed where each flush is required to carry the solids such distances. It is much better to go with the 1.6 gpf toilet in this case as well.

As a general rule of thumb it is safest to go with the 1.6gpf toilet if you aren’t sure as usually those perform better. The instanced where you can get by with a 1.28gpf toilet is in town houses or condos or where the toilet is very close to where the main drain line exits the house.

Hopefully this is helpful, and as always, if you have questions about what toilet to choose for your house, give us a call or text us and we would be happy to come out and discuss the right solution to fit your needs.
