Ask Your Plumber: DIY Toilet Fixes?

Ask Your Plumber:

DIY Toilet Fixes?

Toilet Problems are no fun for anyone, so here are some FAQ’s answered by our Next Level Master Plumber Byron, to help you out!

Toilets are probably one of the most common problem areas in regards to home plumbing systems. Because of this it is more common for people to try fixing the problem toilets themselves. This can work out great and save you a nice chunk of money, or it can work out terribly and end in major water damage as well as an insurance claim. And of course, it can also end anywhere in between those two places.

As a plumber I often get asked if I think fixing their toilet is something they can tackle on their own. I always answer as honestly as I can.

I don’t know!

It depends on how well you understand what is going wrong with the toilet, how well you understand the repair needed to fix the toilet, how good you are at actually removing the old parts and installing new ones, and then finally how good you are at troubleshooting if it doesn’t work as planned. And I don’t know most of my customers well enough to know the answer to that.

Fixing your own toilet is not usually too hard, but they can be finicky.

One brand/style of part might not work well with another, or an adjustment might need to be made to one part when installing another part. And even when it all goes together, something else can go wrong.

The real question you should ask yourself if you want to tackle fixing your own toilet is this. Am I willing to make as many trips to Home Depot, and put as many hours into this as it might require?

If you aren’t willing to take at least two trips to the store and at least 3 hours of your time, then I recommend not even trying. Sometimes the job goes better, but a lot of times for people who have never fixed their own toilet before it can take a lot of time and patience.

The last thing is to know when to quit.

As a plumber I have come into the house and fixed the problem in minutes that the customer had spent half their Saturday trying in vain to fix. After they finally got to the end of their rope they called me.

If the job isn’t going well, or the first try didn’t work like the YouTube video said it would, ask yourself if maybe this is a good time to call the professional.

There is no shame in doing that.

I know plumbing because that’s what I do. But I call the professional in when there is something besides plumbing that I need done.

In short, if you want to try fixing your own toilet make a plan in advance. Figure how many trips or hours you want to spend on the project and call the plumber if the repair exceeds it. That or another simple method is to count the curse words.

When you reach your limit, whatever that is, call the plumber.

Summer Saves (Round 2)

Check Out This Useful Summer Save Courtesy of NLP’s Owner & Master Plumber, Byron!

Keep reading below to learn about an easy summer save you can do this week!

It is still summer, and here in Florida it feels like it will never end. But it will! One day cool weather will come in on a breeze and we will all be rejoicing! But until that time, we need to keep up on the things that are easier to do in the heat, like washing the car.

Washing the car is a joy for some, and a chore for others. Regardless of what it is for you, there is no need to go through any extra work when it comes to maintaining your vehicle’s exterior looks. One of the big things you can do (if your house is lacking it) is to put a hose bib near where you want to wash your car. Sounds like common sense right?

If the house you live in currently has a hose bib near the garage you may think this sounds absurd to even mention it. But for those of us, and yes I am one of them, who do not have a hose bib near the garage, we have to drag 100 feet of hose from wherever is closest and then start washing the car. Doesn’t sound like a lot, but it really is, especially on a hot day.

This is why it is on my to do list to install a hose bib near the garage to wash the car. There are several ways of getting a cold water spigot where you want to use it. It can be run underground, through an attic, out a side wall, or many other options depending on the layout of the house and garage.

For those of you who already have the ease of a spigot near your garage, enjoy it! For those that don’t, make it a summer project to get it completed so the car will be less work to wash, and be cleaned more often.

We hope you enjoyed this Summer Save Tip from Byron!

PSA! It’s Hug Your Boss Day!

Important PSA!
Tomorrow is “Hug Your Boss Day!”

(September 19th Info Link!)

September 19th is a special day on my calendar, but it’s probably a day many others don’t know about or choose to celebrate.

Why?

Not everyone knows there’s a day out there just for celebrating your boss, if they do know, they might not WANT to celebrate their boss, or maybe they just aren’t on good enough terms to stroll over and give their boss a big ol’ hug. Whatever the situation its ok! Luckily for me, my boss is my husband!

I love being asked what my job is, because it allows me to explain that I’m employed by my handsome hard-working husband! Ironically, after I say I work for my husband, they ask what the business is, or what my husband does, to which I reply, “He owns Next Level Plumbing!” However, while most people acknowledge and even appreciate the hard work they do and money plumbers can make,  they don’t usually have the best immediate perception of plumbers as individuals.

Byron definitely doesn’t look like a plumber according to basically everyone (from friends to new customers) so when they meet him they’re usually taken aback by his neat, clean cut look and quiet, exceptionally polite and professional manners. This is one reason I’m always proud of my boss, because he exceeds expectations and always goes above and beyond in everything he does, not just in running his business!

There’s no doubt about it, Byron is exceptional at his job, which is why he started Next Level Plumbing! But I’m really not writing this blog to solely brag on Byron and the hard work he puts into making Next Level Plumbing so “next level”… I’m also writing this as a reminder to everyone out there to take the time to appreciate and be thankful for theirs bosses, or really, whoever is helping lead them in the business they’re in, or the job they do! If you’re your own boss, then give yourself a well-deserved hug!

So on that note, send your boss an air hug, a “thank you” call or text, grab them a cup of coffee, or let them know how much they’re appreciated for their hard work! You might be surprised how much they appreciate that an employee is going out of their way for them!

So don’t hesitate to hug, or send an air hug to your boss tomorrow! Let them know they’re appreciated!
