Fall is Upon Us! …Right?

Fall is Upon Us! …Right?

Here in Florida, sometimes we might be well into the Fall season, but Florida has yet to play catch-up still sporting it’s mid summer attitude with intense heat and humidity.

I, for one, am an absolute Fall lover. The weather, the colors, the food, the atmosphere it brings…. Fall is my favorite! But living in Florida can make it difficult to really feel and appreciate the Fall season.

So, we’re sharing some of our favorite ways to feel the Fall season a bit more here in Florida! Check out our “Next Level” list of Fall faves below!

Here are a few things we’re FALL About!

Cinnamon Brooms or Fall scented candles!

You can find these brooms in most grocery stores these days! Not meant for sweeping, but adding that fantastic fall scent to your home; you can get the small or large kind to hang in your living room, laundry room, car or somewhere else! Not a huge cinnamon fan? Then light your favorite candle and enjoy the cozy feeling it brings to the room!

Pumpkins!

Can one ever really have too many pumpkin during Autumn? Well… maybe…. but I haven’t experienced that yet! Get a pumpkin or two, place them where they will add some autumnal joy to your life, carve one into a happy jack o’ lantern if you so desire, and enjoy!

Simulate the Fall Atmosphere!

The weather outside is sticky and hot? If you aren’t too worried about your electricity bill, turn the AC down a few notches and enjoy the cool feeling of Fall inside!

Bake Something!

If turning down the AC wasn’t enough, you can try baking something as well! Your favorite pie, cookies, bread or pastry, make a soup or Fall favorite that fills the house with a wonderful aroma and warms the soul!

Hope these ideas help you feel Fall in the air! Enjoy!

PSA: Plumbing Regulations

Plumbing Service Announcement:

-Plumbing Regulations to be Aware Of-

Today Byron, Next Level Plumbing’s owner and master plumber, is sharing some important plumbing regulations for new homeowners, renters, landlords, when remodeling, etc.

When making upgrades to your house it is important to consider what people you hire to make those upgrades. As a plumber that has been in the field for over 16 years, I have seen jobs that are so terrible I struggle not to laugh out loud in front of the customer; so dangerous that I have had to kill the power and run; and others simply installed incorrectly that never worked well from day one.

And THAT is why we have codes and laws to follow. Not just because when people don’t it drives me crazy, but the important fact that those codes are not only there to protect the current homeowner, but also future homeowners.

It is always a good idea to check with your local authorities concerning your project because requirements can change or vary from county to county. Regardless, I will give a few examples of things to look for so you can be a little more prepared.

There will always be people who will want to do your project for you, but not all of them are qualified. When planning for an upgrade, it is always good to contact the experts in the particular field. Sometimes a handyman can accomplish the upgrades you require, but sometimes they cannot.

Remember! A good handyman should be perfectly willing to tell you that the project exceeds his license, or what portion of the project does.

Each trade has its own license.

The handyman can do small things, but when you get to AC, electric, plumbing etc., it is best to contact a business in those trades specifically. This is becoming more and more important as new technology is introduced and things are not all the same as they used to be.

There are some tasks for the trades that are illegal for someone without a license to perform. Whatever requires a permit needs to be performed by a licensed contractor for that task, or the homeowner can do it themselves. This means that for me, as a plumber, I cannot run a new electric line to a new water heater location because a licensed electrical contractor needs to do that. Ask me to do it? Well…

Sometimes these codes and regulations seems burdensome, but the reason they are there is to give security to the owner and future owners that the job is done correctly and will not cause the building structural problems or even health problems down the road.

Next Level Tips: Smart Meter Savvy

Next Level Tips: Smart Meter Savvy

Need some next level tips from the best plumber in town? Perfect! We’ve got you covered! Next Level Plumbing’s owner and master plumber, Byron Thomson, has some tips for you on how to you can keep an eye on your water bill and prevent leaks and expensive charges!

Watch your water bill!

If your water bill is creeping up month over month and you are not changing your habits, you may have a leak you don’t realize you have. You can keep track by watching your monthly water bill, or if you are into tech, or want to keep closer tabs on your water usage you can install a smart meter in your water supply.

A smart meter is something that is installed in your water supply system at the source and constantly measures the water being used. It then analyzes the water usage, and learns your patterns. After a while it will be able to tell what your water related habits are, and notify you when water usage occurs outside of your normal patterns.

You can also connect this to your phone so you see the data on how much water you use for what fixtures, at what time of the day. You can also get alerts if anything is not right, and even turn it off from your phone and call the plumber if there is a problem.

PSA: Hurricane Ready?

Plumbing Service Announcement:

Next Level Hurricane Preparedness!

Most people think of Florida and automatically envision crystal blue water and sandy white beaches, sunny weather, tourists and fishing. However, along with all those summer vibes there’s also summer storms of both small and LARGE scales. And those storms are pretty good at coming out of nowhere! So being prepared is necessary!

For those of us who have grown up in Florida and are used to experiencing those summer Hurricanes and tropical storms it’s a little less intimidating because we know what to expect…

HOWEVER!

Florida is constantly drawing in new residents from all over the place, and if you decide to settle down here in Sarasota, or anywhere in Florida, you need to be prepared for hurricanes and tropical storms!

Preparing for the summer storms means more than just tossing up some plywood over your windows or hurricane proofing the outside of your house. You also need to be checking around your property considering the strong winds that these powerful storms can bring. If there are trees that look like they can do damage to any part of your house or residence, consider doing some trimming to avoid branches or whole trees crashing down anywhere.

But what about the plumbing when prepping for hurricane season! Anything we need to do when it comes to our home’s plumbing!?

Absolutely!

Check out the tips below from Byron, Next Level Plumbing’s owner & master plumber!

Hey all! It’s hurricane season! Since it’s extra important to protect your family, home, and investments during this time of year, let me help you do that by sharing what I know to assist you along the way.

On Well Water?

If you are, remember that if you lose power that means you have lost water as well. Make sure you have a way to connect a generator to the well system, if possible, so you can continue to have water!

No Water Available?

If you DO lose water there are a couple different places that hold water in case of emergency. It is a good idea to test these and see if they are working.

1. Toilets: the toilet tank will hold water enough for one flush, if the parts are working well. If they have a slow leak they will be out of water in no time. If your toilet turns on by itself that is a sign that it leaks.

2. Tubs: a tub can be filled with water for reserve before a hurricane. Most tubs hold quite a lot of water. You can then bucket the water out of the tub and pour it into the toilet tank to get extra flushes. If the tub leaks however, the water will be gone before you really need it. Double check that it holds water by filling it part way at night, and then see if it is at the same level in the morning.

3. Sinks: a sink can be used in much the same way as the tub, but they hold significantly less water, and therefore have a smaller impact.

4. Water heaters: the water heater holds however many gallons that it says under “capacity” on its label. Many are 40-50 gallons. This water could be drained in an emergency through the drain valve at the bottom of the water heater. However, many water heaters are not maintained and build sediment up at the bottom which can block off the water flow, decrease the capacity of the tank, make the water that comes out very murky, and of course, cost more money in the long run.

Best thing to do to be prepared for an emergency with your water heater is to have a special valve installed that allows for good flow to come out so the chances that sediment blocks it decrease. Annual or even biannual flushes are good to keep the sediment down.

IMPORTANT NOTE!

If you ever do have to use the water from your water heater, remember to turn the power or gas off to it! If a water heater heats empty, parts will break! Even if the power is off, turn off the breaker so that it doesn’t automatically turn on and wreck the elements.

5. Reverse Osmosis: for those that filter their water through reverse osmosis, remember that as it makes water it stores it in a small tank. Once this tank is run out, it will take a while to refill it. If you are planning to fill containers with drinking water from your R.O. unit, make sure to start filling them a few days in advance so the R.O. can keep up. Or you can always install a reverse osmosis unit that is designed with a pump, and will make water on demand instead of storing it.

Lastly…

For those that have outside whole house water filtration units it is tough to tell what to do with them. They are heavy and will not blow away very easily, but something could get wind-born and hit them causing damage. I personally will leave mine outside and take my chances. The other option is to have a plumber come out, disconnect them, and bring them into the garage or a safe storage unit on the property.
